Zero Liquid Discharge Systems Leading the Boom in Unconventional Gas
Zero Liquid Discharge Systems Leading the Boom in Unconventional Gas The latest McIlvaine Fluid/Gas Treatment and Control World Markets report predicts substantial investments in pumps and other equipment to fuel a $5 billion boost in the fluid-treatment market during 2012. Nearly 20% of that market growth will come from sales of pumps for hydraulic fracturing, according to the report. Also singled out is expected growth in use of zero liquid discharge systems, which offer great potential in quelling environmental concerns with the fracturing process. The report also forecasts modest growth of the overall air-, gas-, and liquid-treatment market, from $380 billion in 2011 to $400 billion in 2012.

New Progressing Cavity Pump Design
Mono Pumps Ltd
New Progressing Cavity Pump DesignNOV Mono has launched a revolutionary new pump that is easy to de-rag and maintain. The chamber of the EZstrip™ can be opened easily, allowing rotating parts to be de-ragged, without disconnecting the suction and discharge pipework. Many of our customers can't believe that is possible to maintain a pump so quickly, so we have produced a demonstration video, which can be viewed on our Web site.

Pump Control Earns Water Industry Innovation Award
Pump Control Earns Water Industry Innovation AwardAn intelligent pump controller earned an Innovation Award from the UK's Institute of Water Welsh Area. The controller calculates the time remaining before a spill, warning operators to take action. Additionally, an alarm compares optimum pump efficiency with measured rate of change to identify a possible burst main or to warn of a blocked pump.
Wastewater Samplers Boast High Torque OEM Pumps
Wastewater Samplers Boast High Torque OEM PumpsCalled an "entirely new generation of intelligent wastewater samplers," Hydrocell systems from Pulsonic Technologies feature high-torque OEM pumps selected in part due to their lift capability. Certain applications, such as food manufacturing, require as much as 7 m of lift. This typically would require a second pump — not the case here.

Sliding Vane Pumps Push Paint Solvents

Sliding Vane Pumps Push Paint SolventsDesigned to load, transfer, and unload solvents, which move paint pigment and binder from the container to the workpiece surface, a new pump features an integral head-mounted gear-reduction drive. To simplify pump and reducer alignment, a splined reducer can be rotated on the pump head. A symmetrical ball-bearing gear-shaft support promotes even loading and smooth operation.
Pulp Manufacturer's Power-smart Pump Project
Pulp Manufacturer's Power-smart Pump ProjectA 1960s vintage oversized slurry pump at a Canadian pulp-manufacturing facility was dissipating excess pressure as heat and vibration, leading to numerous maintenance headaches. Replacing the oversized 200 hp pump motor with a 150-hp model and adding a variable-frequency drive are saving the plant 800 MWh of electricity per year.

Helping AOD Pump Operators Break the Ice
Helping AOD Pump Operators Break the IceIce buildup can quickly block an AOD pump's exhaust system. Here's an engineer's advice to help pump operators avoid this threat and consistently deliver clean, dry air to their pumps. New technology introduced: a thermally engineered muffler plate. Other desirable pump-design features include a straight exhaust path, and a common, single exit port.
Protection Relays Prevent Catastrophes
Protection Relays Prevent CatastrophesNumerous fault conditions can cause pump motors to fail, including an electrical ground fault and a pump running dry. Real-time diagnostic features of modern microprocessor-based motor-protection relays can alert maintenance staff so that they can proactively schedule corrective actions. For example, a relay with a low-current setpoint can protect against a dry pump situation.

Slurry Pumps Help Mine Profits
Slurry Pumps Help Mine ProfitsIncreased flow and reduced electrical current draw are benefits pump operators enjoy when upgrading their slurry pumps to new models designed specifically for harsh environmental conditions. When faced with pumping heavy-duty slurries, look for pump features such as double-wall designs and large-diameter impellers that enable slower motor speeds, resulting in higher efficiency and reduced wear.
A Clean Tanker is a Happy Tanker
A Clean Tanker is a Happy TankerEurope's MOL Tankship Management is using a custom-engineered waterjet-cleaning system to maintain its fleet of methanol tankers during voyages between the Caribbean, U.S. Gulf, and Europe. Among the challenges to developing the system: the hydraulic motor-driven pump set had to utilize the ship's own hydraulic supply to power the ultra-high-pressure pump.

Solving a Powerless Pump ProblemProfessional engineer Walter Driedger tells Design News about the time he went out to check the status of a river-water pump that was running, but whose status indicator said otherwise. He reset the breaker, but it tripped again. Using a clever method detailed here, Driedger determined the problem — a non-functioning check valve.
