Controllers Achieve Efficiency Gains

A PG&E power generating facility installed a digital governor that increased unit efficiency
by 2% overall and 3% in lower power ranges on multiple needle impulse
turbines. The project required independent positioning of deflectors and
needles, allowing for needle sequencing. Newly installed, separate
proportional valves on hydraulic control manifolds provided the biggest
efficiency benefits.

Nuke Actuators Undergo Tough Testing

Actuators used in nuclear plants face tough conditions, even before they are installed.
Each actuator undergoes rigorous testing. In newest generation nuclear
plants, up to 13,000 actuators go through this exhaustive process. Test
results are vetted by consulting engineers, utilities, and perhaps even
the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Valve Magazine looks at some types of facilities, valve configurations in use, and available tests.

How to Fix a Pipeline Offset Problem

Settling at a nuclear power plant caused a pipeline offset problem, which was solved by an expansion joint made of elastomeric material derived from the tire industry. A 108 in. diameter pipe had a 2 in. offset, says Maintenance Technology.
Typically, the adjacent valve would have been replaced or refurbished,
but realigning the piping or ordering custom valves would have been cost
prohibitive without the expansion joint solution.

Valve Selection Critical for HVAC Systems Design

Designing piping for HVAC and refrigeration systems requires choosing
valves based on ease-of-use, flow rate, leak rate, cost, field-service
requirements, and other factors. Several valve options are available to
introduce air, gas, and liquids into the system. Understand the benefits and limitations of Schrader-style valves, high-flow valves, process tubing paired with connectors, and a valve quick-connection system as HPAC Engineering relates.

Eliminate Leaks with 60 Series Ball Valve
Swagelok Company
|
Coaxial valves
from co-ax inc. are leak-free, high cycle-life, bi-directional,
pressure-balanced, low-profile valves. The short linear stroke of the
internal PowerTube™
makes actuation unusually fast. The PowerTube™ is the flow channel
through the valve — and actuated between inlet and outlet. Two or
three-way versions. Externally controlled or direct acting versions.

Having issues with stem or seat leakage? The Swagelok® 60 series ball
valve prevents seat leakage with a floating ball that doesn't require
pressure to create a seal. A unique coned-disc spring-loaded seat
maintains a seal regardless of flow direction. To learn more about the
60 series, visit swagelok.com.

Sludge Control Saves 30% in Power

A UK-based wastewater treatment center features sludge settlement tanks
that are meant to run at a blanket level of up to 20% of depth. Levels
are controlled by return activated sludge (RAS) valves. The previous
system often misread levels causing the valve to unnecessarily activate.
The new blanket monitoring system features a transducer that dips just
below the surface and sends a control signal back to a PLC.

Growth Mandates New Valve

A small community in Pennsylvania that services neighboring townships
replaced a manually operated pressure reducing valve (PRV) with a PRV
featuring an integral backup to provide emergency backflow. The previous
system required an operator to open a gate valve, while the new
system's pilot valve senses pressure changes to control valve position. If it fails, the backup pilot system engages to control pressure above the diaphragm.

World's Deepest Subsea Oil Well

Shell Oil is producing oil from the world's deepest subsea oil well. At 9,627 ft below
the water's surface, it's located 200 miles southwest of Houston.
Because of its distance to the shore, existing pipelines were used and
ROVs performed such tasks as controlling valves and programming control
panels. Check out this interactive display for an overall view of the rig.

Legislating More Valves for Safety

The U.S. Department of Transportation wants to expand the use of excess flow valves
in natural gas pipelines beyond single family homes into larger
residential and commercial applications. The DOT also proposed
legislation to increase penalties for pipeline violations, strengthen
risk management requirements, and improve data reporting. Meanwhile in
Congress, pipeline legislation requiring automatic and remote-controlled
shutoff valves is likely to be approved.

The world's finite oil and gas supply might be supplanted by low-carbon
sources well before it's exhausted. Cost to extract oil is growing in
proportion to how difficult it is to capture from difficult environs. It
is, opines the Engineer, the end of the easy oil era. Today, the race is on to utilize enhanced oil recovery to capture the remaining 80% of oil routinely abandoned in yesteryear's strikes.

From the Tower to the Grid

Excess pressure generated as water runs from water towers
into municipal water systems can be harnessed and turned into energy.
The turbine system was installed in a pilot project in Connecticut in
2007 and two additional commercial installations have been completed.
Currently, the manufacturer is looking to increase output of a
dual-turbine system ( video) beyond its current 62 kW peak capacity.
