Quick Tip
Quick iPad App Management
We all know there’s a quick and easy way to delete iPad apps, but what if you’re looking for something more centralized – like a place to uninstall apps and check space, etc?
Well, that’s an easy one!
Tap Settings>General>Usage and you’ll get a whole screen devoted to what’s installed on your iPad.
Simply tap an app for a rundown of how much space it takes up and a quick option to delete the app if you so desire.
All in one place, and super easy!

Restore Chrome Bookmarks Bar
The problem with moving over to a different web browser is that when you change something, the option to change back isn’t always located where you’d expect. Take for example awhile back when I accidentally lost my Google Chrome Bookmarks Bar. It was simply a matter of right-clicking on the toolbar and de-selecting “Show bookmarks bar” to lose it, but finding the option to turn it back on was not where I expected.
So, today I’m going to save everyone else the time and just point it out.
In Chrome, click on the wrench icon in the upper right-hand corner.
Now, go to Settings, and in the resulting window look under the Appearance heading. Make sure a check mark is in theAlways show the bookmarks bar option.
Oh, and if that’s too much, you can always use the shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+B to get it back.
Yeah, I know it’s really easy, but it’s bound to save someone out there some precious time!

Computers 101
Lynn King from IL writes:
How do I find my chkdsk utility and how do I schedule a check for errors? I have Windows Vista.
Hi, Lynn. Thanks for the great question.
Running the chkdsk utility in either Windows Vista or 7 is pretty easy. To begin with, click the “start” button, and then “computer”.
Right-click on the drive that you want to scan, and then click on “properties”.
This will open up the drive’s properties dialogue window. Click on the “tools” tab and then on “check now” under error checking.
Once you click “Check Now”, a dialogue box will come up giving you the option of automatically repairing errors, as well as one that will look for and try to fix bad sectors on the disc. These are sectors containing information that can’t be read. If the sector is bad due to corrupt data, then it can be recovered. If it’s bad due to a hardware problem, such as damage to the disk surface, then it can’t. It’s a good idea to click both boxes.
Once you click “start”, you will be prompted to reboot your machine. Once you do, the disk check will start. Depending on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your machine, this could take anywhere from ten or fifteen minutes to a couple of hours to complete. Be patient. Allow your machine the time to do this. Go make a sandwich and watch “Being Human” or something. Once it’s done, you’ll have a happier, healthier machine.
Hope that this helps!

Ryan B. from Spokane, Washington asks:
I have a question about updates. I have an antivirus and firewall program installed and they always notify me when they have updated everything; I figure that’s good since they are the most important. I also have Windows Update. I am very busy and get tired of having Windows Update nagging me to update all of the time but I do end up installing the updates eventually. I know that as long as I update at all, it’s enough. Is it really necessary to update my computer as often as Windows Update says? Do any other programs need to updated more? I hate updating, it’s a bore. I never remember when I’m supposed to do it, anyway..

First, thanks for writing, Ryan; this is a really good (and very important) question to ask.
First off, let me say three things:
#1: You’re right; your antivirus and firewall programs are at the top of the list of programs to be updated regularly. However, there are other important programs to update consistently, such as your antispyware programs (if you don’t have any – and you need one – click here to take a look at some possibilities).
#2: Windows Update is definitely necessary and I am really sorry it nags you. That little yellow whatever-it-is with the exclamation point in the middle of it is irritating, to say the least, if only because it never goes away!
#3: Finally, you have to update these programs on a regular basis since there are new flaws and malware and new harmful-to-your-computer’s-well-being code written every day. Updating your programs assures you that you are one step ahead of the bad guys. It’s all about up-to-date protection.
And Ryan, I agree; updating programs yourself is – at best – a mundane, tedious, ho-hum, dull, monotonous, boring, dreary, seemingly-endless way of spending your time. Besides, who has time to remember to do a mundane, tedious, ho-hum, dull, monotonous, boring, dreary, seemingly-endless way of spending your time when you have anything else to do? Watching paint dry is probably more fun than sitting there waiting for 63 updates to complete. And it’s quicker, too.
Where were we? Oh, yes, updating is a mundane, tedious, blah-blah-blah thing to do manually. So let’s cut to the chase and set Windows to update automatically, that way you won’t have that symbol to deal with anymore.
Windows Updates:
To set Windows Updates to automatically update your system, go to the Windows Update website’s home page (duh).
Now when I went to it (and I was using Firefox), here’s what I got:
image
Okay, so I’ll do what it says.
image
image
And then you get directed to the web page (Note: I am on a Vista computer, consequently your view may be different.)
image
The box below pops up. Notice all of the different options. Click on the little arrow to the right of the long box. A list of options will drop down; select Install updates automatically (recommended) and then click OK.
image
Now choose a time that you want it to update your system. I chose to update my computer every day at 3:00 AM. Click on any of the little arrows to change the time and day.
image
You’re all set! Now you don’t have to worry about Windows Updates nagging you any more; it will just update itself at whatever time you chose.
If you don’t have any anti-spyware programs installed, please find one (there are a lot of good ones for free) and install it! Once again, here’s the link to find what you need.
Just remember: Anything that you need to update on a regular basis rarely comes without an automatic update feature. So go forth and auto-update! And thanks again for writing!

On The Move
Bre asks:
I just got an Android 4.0 phone with a limited data plan. I heard that the Android sleep policy settings can help conserve data usage, but all I can find are instructions from earlier versions that don’t work with my phone. Can you help?
Thanks for the question Bre. Yes, changing the Android Wi-Fi sleep policy makes it possible for users to achieve a balance between data and battery usage, with several settings options. For example, those who like to stay connected, but have a limited data plan, can set up their Android device to receive Wi-Fi transmission when the device is on standby or asleep, thus conserving data usage. On the other hand, if transmissions are set up to sync in the background (news, weather, Facebook, Gmail, etc.), this same setting can be a drain on the battery. In that case, an option is provided to receive a Wi-Fi signal only when the phone is plugged in.
In earlier versions, the settings were buried pretty deep in the system–and they still are–but with Android 4.0 (ICS), a couple of steps were eliminated.

I would like to turn my control panel to classic view in windows 7 64 bit. How do I do this?
It’s not uncommon for someone to miss the classic view of the control panel… the new look has everything sorted into a few categories so that what you’re after may take a couple of layers to find.
For example, let’s assume that I’m looking for the power settings on my laptop. When I open the Control Panel I initially see this:

Amanda's Coolsite
Forget the Film, Watch the Titles
I have always loved the opening title and the ending credits of a movie. I’m always the last one out of the theater, I watch the credits scroll till the screen goes black. I do this for two reasons – easter eggs (bonus film clips that might be hiding in the credits) and to see the soundtrack listing (which is almost always last). But this site takes this to another level and really celebrates the talent and design that goes into creating the title and credits for movies.
On the main page you can see what titles are being featured – this is where I started browsing (with the Snow White and the Huntsman credits which are very well done and really dark), but you can also use the main menu in the top left of the page to navigate. It has the following categories: Browse All 180 Titles, Browse All 98 Designers, Browse Subjects, and About. I love that there is an option to browse the designers of these title sequences. Not sure what is being highlighted on the site? Then check out the About section which lays it all out for you. You’ll also find the FAQ in the About section.
When you select one to check out, you will find a video of the title/credit sequence being examined – stills, font, design interviews, and more. They really break down the hard work that creates the magic and charm of these sequences. And if you find a designer or design team whose work you really love you can then go check out the what else they’ve done by browsing by Designer.
I thought it was very neat to see the process of how these sequences come together for our viewing pleasure, and how they can transcend their functional role of setting the tone for the movie by becoming mini works of art. Check it out today!

Find a Doctor
Finding a doctor is hard. Unlike a lot of services today, you can’t just hop on the internet and do a search for a doctor near you and get reviews like you might for a restaurant. Finding a good doctor is still very much a word of mouth endeavor. Your friends recommmend so and so, or your mother recommmends someone else. How do you sort it all out? Well, there are places on the internet that are trying to change that. One of them is Everyday Health.
Everyday Health brings you the ability to find doctors, dentists, specialists, hospitals, healthcare providers, mental health professionals by state, city. They’ve built a search engine that lets you search for doctors close to where you live in a variety of fields (general practitioner, specialist, dentist, etc.).
Did I mention it is easy to use? Just type in your zip code or city and state, then set the range of miles that you want them to be within and the type of physician you are looking for from the drop down boxes and click the green Show Results button. Have a pre-existing condition or need a certain type of specialist? Well you can search by condition instead! However, you chose to search a list of physicians will be presented and you can click on their name to learn about their practice, what specialties they are certified for, what hospitals they are affiliated with, and see other patient’s reviews of their practice.
Do you have a great physician? Well then, why don’t you spread the word by writing them a review? When you use the search engine you can fill it out with the all the information plus your physician’s name and when you find them on list click the Review This Health Professional link to write a review of your experience with them.
I think that over time this is a trend that will really take off, because people are more likely to trust services that have been reviewed by their peers.
