Eruptive Technology for Geothermal, and more...

Eruptive Technology Gets Geothermal Going
Eruptive Technology Gets Geothermal GoingThe successful completion of a project planned in Oregon this summer may light a fuse to pick up the pace of geothermal energy development in the U.S. A $43 million effort will pump 24 million gallons of water into the dormant Newberrry Volcano, after which AltaRock Energy and Davenport Newberry Holdings LLC will recover heated water. A new hydroshearing technology will be demonstrated by pouring 800 gal/minute of water into a 10,600 ft test well over three weeks. Cost-effectively tapping this hot rock resource, which is abundant in the western U.S., is key to increasing geothermal generating capacity.

Power for Interplanetary Roving
Power for Interplanetary RovingAs a durable energy source is required for interplanetary missions, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory scientists are looking to advanced microbial fuel cells to power a 1 kg autonomous microrover. The high-energy density biological system is believed capable of supporting low-power electronics and supplying battery, research instrumentation, and locomotive power.
How Hydrates Hold Hydrogen
How Hydrates Hold HydrogenComputer modeling analyses by U.S. Pacific Northwest National Lab researchers demonstrate that the ice-like scaffold that holds gas hydrates together can store hydrogen at an optimal capacity of 5 wt %. The maximum storage capacity of hydrogen hydrates is about 10 wt %, and can be realized under high pressure andpractical storage temperatures.
