3D Targets Auto Defects
By using 3D cameras or positioning 2D cameras in stereo configurations, auto manufacturers and suppliers have vastly improved inspection of fuel and brake fluid piping, reports Design News. Alcon 3D, a global metrology company, chose high-resolution Marlin cameras for a system that determines pipe geometry, takes and records synchronous images, and measures bends of 5 to 180 degrees. The cameras also perform image pre-processing, such as debayering, color and shading correction, and image mirroring.

New Weapons in Food Safety Fight
With surveys showing rising consumer concern about food safety, Food Qualitymagazine reviews some of the latest technologies to detect contaminants and other problems. The OmniView multi-camera system provides fast inspection and traceability of cylindrical products, such as cans and bottles, without even turning labels to the camera. In packaging applications, MOCON's Greenlight system uses a sensor probe to identify microbial bacteria in meat, dairy, and seafood products ( see video).

Make VOC Work for You
Voice of the customer is a time-honored Six Sigma technique, but it can sidetrack your efforts if used improperly. This article cites several mistakes QC staff make with VOC and tells how to avoid them. Some examples: failure to identify all relevant customer groups and using the wrong data collection method for the type of information you need. You also need to translate customer statements to Critical-to-Quality characteristics .

Making High-tech Cars Safe
How to ensure safety in autos that are getting increasingly complex, with such features as collision avoidance systems, lane-departure alarms, and backup warnings? ISO has taken that issue head-on with a new standard, ISO 26262, Road Vehicles — Functional Safety. The standard provides and supports an auto safety lifecycle, including management, development, production, operation, service, and decommissioning. It also outlines an automotive-specific, risk-based approach and addresses requirements for suppliers.

Analyze Vibration on the Go
Vibration analysis on machine tools and other production equipment can head off problems before they cause product defects or costly downtime. Now, factory staff can perform that analysis faster and easier with SpindleScope software running on an iPad ( see video demo). With one touch, users can measure such parameters as acceleration, velocity, and temperature, then transmit data wirelessly to team members.

Transmitter Breakthrough Holds NDT Promise
Researchers at Germany's Technical University of Darmstadt have developed a terahertz transmitter that has generated the highest frequency ever attained by a microelectronic device, paving the way for new applications in nondestructive testing . To overcome size and cost hurdles affecting terahertz transmitters, the team designed a resonance tunnel diode (RTD) that measures less than one square millimeter. The RTD can also be produced using conventional semiconductor fabrication technologies.
