Disabling Google Instant Predictions
When searching from the Google home page, “Instant Predictions”–by default–automatically moves the search field from the center of the browser window to the upper left corner, with suggested links immediately appearing below, as search text is entered. This feature, according to Google, saves a whopping 2-5 seconds per search. While a second saved is a second gained, some consider this to be more confusing than convenient. If you’re annoyed or distracted by the deluge of links, Instant Predictions can be disabled.
Note: How Google Instant works–and how it’s accessed–may be different than described here, depending on the browser (Firefox, Chrome, etc,) or the OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7).
Go to http://www.google.com/, click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the browser window, and select Search settings.
Under Search results, click the On button to turn it off.
Scroll to the bottom and click Save.
Cookies must be enabled (the default setting in most browsers) for this change to take effect. If, like me, you frequently clean out cookies, this will have to be reset each time.

Hi, Hailey!
Yep, you can change the icons to the little picture preview (thumbnails) and back again if you want to. Here’s how:
My Pictures is usually stored in your Documents folder. To get to your Documents folder in a really easy way (if it’s not already on your desktop) is to first go to your Start button and left-click. When your Start menu pops up, at the very top of the right side you will see an icon preview (how ironic is that?) and below it, your user name. Below that is Documents. Left-click on it.
After you left-click on your Documents, go up to the top left of your folder to Organize (it’s under the Menu bar – File, Edit, etc.). Left-click on the little upside-down triangle to the right of that. A list of options will drop down; go down the list until you find Folder and Search Options (it’s right under Layout). Left-click on that.
If you’re using XP, instead of Organize, you want the Tools menu. In there, you’ll find Folder Options.
After you click on Folder and Search Options, a (dialog) box will pop up with three tabs: General, View, and Search. Left-click on View.
Under View (in the middle), the first thing you’ll see is Folder Views. Under that, there is a white box with a bunch of settings (labeledAdvanced Settings) that you can change so that you can customize your computer. The very first setting in this box is the one we need, which is Always show icons, never thumbnails. Uncheck this box.
Left-click on Apply, and then left-click on OK.
Now you can see your pictures!
I would like to note here that when you enable the option for thumbnails and not icons, you may notice a difference in your computer performance. When you change this option, thumbnails will be displayed instead of icons on your whole computer, not just My Pictures. When Windows pulls up a thumbnail, it draws on more resources than it does when it pulls up an icon. In other words, Windows has to work a little harder with thumbnails. It’s just like you said, it’s a little picture, and pictures are larger files (even little ones). Thus, a thumbnail (a little picture) is larger than a plain ole itty-bitty icon, so it takes more for Windows to open it than it does to open an icon. If you find that your computer is running a little slower than you would like, follow the tutorial above, and this time put a check in the box where it says Always show icons, never thumbnails. If your computer speeds up a little, you have found your culprit.
Then again, it may not make a bit of difference (it doesn’t on mine). And you may not care if it’s a little slower, because not only is your computer prettier, you can see your little pictures again!
If this does slow your computer down, you can also change the view temporarily by clicking on the View menu and selecting different views. However, if you’re using Vista or Windows 7, you may not see a View menu. If not, take a look at How to Setup Classic Menus in Vista and Windows 7.

VideoDropper
We have earlier discussed quite a good number of ways to download YouTube videos on your computer. Some of these methods are too easy, while some of them require you to install a browser extension or a plugin.
But there can be situations when you are surfing YouTube from another person’s computer and want to download a couple of videos right that instant. You don’t have a USB drive with you, nor you have the time to wait for the downloads to finish. So how do you download YouTube videos remotely to your computer’s hard drive from any computer, without having to install anything on the host computer itself ?
VideoDropper is the answer.
If you have a Dropbox account, you can download YouTube videos remotely from any computer or a mobile device, to your computer’s hard drive. There is no need to install any browser extension and neither you have to carry a removable media. Just follow these simple steps:
1. Go to the Videodropper website, hit the “Login with Dropbox” link and sign in with your Dropbox account.
2. On the next page, click “Allow” to grant the app all the necessary permissions to upload the video file to your Dropbox folder. Now you will be taken to the video download page where all you have to do is paste in the URL of the YouTube video which you want to download.
3. You are done.
Videodropper will add your request to their “download queue” and the file will appear in your Dropbox account within an hour or two. The video will be saved in the root folder of your Dropbox account as an FLV file. You can continue using the Videodropper website and request more than one downloads, there aren’t any limits as such.
At the end of the day, run the Dropbox client on your computer and it will download all the videos to your computer’s “My Dropbox” folder. This technique is particularly useful when you are browsing YouTube from your Android or your iOS device. Just paste in the URL of the YouTube video at the VideoDropper website and the file will eventually arrive on your computer’s hard drive. If you have the Dropbox app installed on your smartphone, you can use it to sync the FLV file on your mobile, without having to manually transfer the file using a USB cable.
This is by far, one of the easiest and hassle free way to download YouTube videos from any computer, without having to install anything or wait for the downloads to finish. Everything is taken care in the “cloud”, while you can go play outside.

Meghan, you’re right to be concerned. Since most Android app installations require some special access permissions, you have to decide whether those requirements are justified, and whether the app is worth allowing them. Many of them are necessary, while the need for others is debatable. As a result, I’ll often avoid otherwise interesting and well-received apps, because of the apparently pointless and invasive nature of the required permissions.
An example of an interesting–but nosy–app is Shazam, which enables mobile phone users to identify music that’s playing on their device. Sounds like a pretty cool app. However, their permission requirements include–among others– Your Location and Phone Calls.
When using the phone to download apps from the Android Market, a list of permissions appears below the Accept & Download button.

Passive and Active 3-D TV's... What's the Difference?
Some time ago, I did an article here about the history of 3-D and how it was then coming to a television near you. Now, it has come and prompting another question as it does: What’s the difference between “active” and “passive” 3-D? Well, I’m here to tell you.
Passive 3-d was the first 3-d format, and it still hangs around today. In passive 3-d, two images are displayed on the screen simultaneously, and you wear glasses that can distinguish the two and blend them into a (hopefully) smooth image free of 3-d “artifacts” (the shading that you sometimes see around 3-d images).
There are two types of passive 3-d currently in use. The first, anaglyph (red/cyan) is typically only used on standard def DVD’s.

My thought today is about how each animation is started.

You actually have a couple of other good choices when it comes to starting an object’s animation on a PowerPoint slide.

Whenever I’m checking out a new application for my phone I always check the reviews to see what other people have to say about it. It is from reviewers that you’re going to find out if there are any annoying bugs, or features that don’t work properly. I’m generally just looking for more positive reviews than negative ones, and to see what people do and don’t like about the app.
The next thing I check out is the FAQ. If an app doesn’t have a FAQ more than likely I won’t download it, because I much prefer to be able to troubleshoot/figure out why something isn’t working on my own. I also think that it shows that a company is really thinking about the needs of their customers and what sorts of questions they might come up with about the application.
So what are you waiting for? Go check out this app and see if it is something you could really make the most out of!

Do you want to listen to old radio shows? Well now you can at Archive.org. Here you’ll find old radio shows like Abbott and Costello, Ranger Bill, Batman and many more radio shows that aired before television took off.
Navigation is not only easy, but gives you multiple ways to find the show you want to listen to. You can just scroll down the page and check out which shows are featured an which were just recently added. You can select a letter from the alphabetical menu and see all the programs whose titles start with that letter. You can also browse by keyword/subject, collection, date, and creator. So they’ve given you plenty of way so to find what you are looking for!
Once you click into the category or show title that you want, you’ll find that you have different options for listening. You can stream the show by clicking the stream link, for me these open in WINAMP. Or you can download and save one of the other formats and play it in the appropriate player.
This is a great way to step back into the past and listen to the golden age of radio. Check it out today!
