Higher Learning for Surgical Robotics Seven surgical robots serve as a shared research platform at seven U.S. medical research laboratories in an effort to accelerate medical robotics engineering. The open-source designed Raven II, developed at the University of Washington and University of California (Santa Cruz), includes 7 degrees of freedom, compact electronics, interface for remote operation, and two arms with end-effectors to perform surgery on simulated patients. Kinematic analysis of end-effector positioning is briefly demonstrated in this video. Each institution will start with an identical surgical system, with collaborations to follow and refinements in hardware and software to be exchanged.
