Cassini Spectrometer Detects Space Particle
Thanks to the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS), which was designed to measure charged ions and electrons, scientists have discovered a new class of space particles called submicroscopic nanograins near Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons. The tiny particles of electrically charged dust were predicted to exist throughout the universe, but this is the first time that researchers have detected and analyzed them.

Warm Microscopy is Fertile Ground
Infertility affects many couples, and now scientists have a new tool to help assess where the problem may lie. A temperature controlled, phase contrast microscope features a warm stage that enables scientists to evaluate sperm motility at body temperature, giving them a highly accurate assessment. The stage is warmed using a bi-filar heating element that covers the entire stage to ensure uniform heating. A temperature sensor employing a platinum resistor ensures temperature stability.

First Light
The James Webb Space Telescope, successor to the Hubble, is ready for first light, according to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK. The lab has finished testing the telescope's mid-infrared instrument (Miri) and is ready to ship it to the U.S. Miri's job is to detect and identify the first luminous objects in the universe, using a sophisticated design that enables the analysis of a wider range of wavelengths — 5-28 μ — than previously used instruments.
