Servo Systems Close the Door on Pneumatic Actuators
Automated machines assembling car-door panels are now equipped with servo-based motion-control systems, replacing pneumatic actuators. Closed-loop control and fully programmable multi-stop positioning result in a 6% productivity gain. And, the use of servo drives enables capture of process data as well as production traceability.

Machine Designer's 'Aha' Optical Fiber Moment
Charged with designing a control platform for a new duct-forming and stacking machine, an engineer eschews a platform built on a PLC and motion controller and opts instead for a single-axis controller. The controller minimizes the amount of hardware required, and uses an optical-fiber motion network — one connection provides full communication and control.

Wiring Practically Disappears with Decentralized Servo
Here's a servo drive — equipped with a Multi-Ethernet interface — that enables direct connection of Ethernet and peripheral devices. This feature is said to reduce the amount of wiring required by as much as 85% compared to a conventional drive. Adjustment of software settings is all that's required for communication-protocol configuration.

Three Golden Rules Cancel Stray Currents
Part 3 of a three-part series on mitigating stray currents in variable-frequency drives at DrivesMag.compresents three golden rules: return as many common-mode currents back to the VFD as possible; equalize ground potential between the VFD chassis ground, motor frame ground, and the neutral of the supply transformer; and filter VFD output for high frequency.

Pumps Provide Creature Comfort at UK Resort
The maintenance staff at Alton Towers Resort has been replacing fan drives in the resort's air-handling plant with new AC drives. The new drives feature I/O modules fitted to receive input from sensorslocated throughout the resort's waterpark, spa, and two hotels, to ensure guest comfort and prevent excessive condensation, which could spoil all the fun.

Performance Depends on Wise Encoder Selection
To ensure accurate positioning and smooth servo-drive performance, designers must carefully evaluate and select the right rotary encoder for the application. Topics discussed in this article include: inductive scanning systems, encoder-signal quality, and interpolation error — "which hurts the positioning accuracy and significantly degrades the speed stability and audible noise behavior of the drive," says the author.

CNC Servos Cure Machine Tool's Memory Loss
Management at rotary-actuator manufacturer Helac Corp. called its vertical turning center a "workhorse…whose older CNC and DC drives/motors were an Achilles heel." To upgrade the machine's control, which often lost its memory during brief power outages, the firm installed a pre-engineered modular retrofit package with new servo drives and motors. As a result, power-quality issues are non-issues.

Single-axis Servos for Mid-range Systems
In this video (2:43 long) filmed at the Rockwell Automation Fair 2011 last November, business manager Kelly Schachenman describes enhancements to the company's mid-range control systems. Included are new Ethernet/IP single-axis indexing servo drives designed "to provide scalability of integrated motion." Typical applications include packaging, material handling, and automated assembly and inspection.

Belts, Chains, Sprockets, and PulleysBerg W.M., Inc.
|
The MicroDrive from Dart Controlsincorporates in a single unit the functionality of DC drive, digital display, On/Run/Off lamps, Manual/Off/Auto switch, counter/timer module, relay(s), power supply, and signal isolator. Eliminating one or more of these components saves purchase cost, panel space, installation labor, and procurement time.
|
W.M. Berg manufactures a wide variety of cable chains, molded belts, sprockets, and pulleys. The belts consist of polyurethane plastic molded over either a single or double stainless steel core. The belts are lightweight, self-lubricating, come in infinite lengths, and are field spliceable with a stainless steel splice.
