Textured Coatings Reduce Drag
Airplanes and boats are more efficient when their surfaces are designed to reduce drag. A research group at the University of Surrey in the UK has developed a process called infrared radiation-assisted evaporative lithography that can create textured plastic surfacescomposed of bumps or ridges in different sizes. The textured coatings can be used in many applications, including on large vessels to reduce drag or as tiny lenses to focus light.

Ship Shape
The U.S. Navy's newest aircraft carrier is getting powder coated inside and out, from the fixtures to the doors and pipes. The powder coating is being used in the ship's many color-coded areas to help people navigate around the massive vessel. The coating is not only environmentally-friendly, but corrosion-resistant: an important detail, since the Navy spends 25 cents of every maintenance dollar on managing corrosion.

So Long, Solvents
A new environmentally-friendly surface cleaner and degreaser replaces toxic solvents like acetone or toluene in the preparation and cleaning of metallic surfaces. The new cleaner, dubbed AF-CLEAN, is non-flammable, biodegradable, less volatile, and evaporates less quickly than traditional solvents. As an added bonus, the cleaner's aluminum bottles can be refilled.

Rolling Repair
Researchers have developed a new technique to repair nano-sized defects. The procedure calls for encapsulated cadmium — selenide nanoparticles in an oil-based microcapsule. The microcapsules roll or glide over a surface, repairing imperfections by releasing the nanoparticles. The inspiration for this "repair-and-go" approach is biological: white blood cells function the same way by identifying and healing damaged tissues.

Hydrophobic or Hydrophilic?
Do you want your textiles to be hydrophobic or hydrophilic? New plasma surface modification equipment can do both, and more. The machine can deposit permanent nano-scale polymer surfaces that either repel or absorb water without affecting the underlying nature of the bulk material. The equipment can also perform ultra-fine surface cleaning to help bond surfaces that are difficult to join.

Looking for Longer-life Implants
Researchers have found that metal-on-metal hip implants form a layer of lubricant between the ball and socket that is similar to that in a combustion engine. The scientists studied implants removed from seven patients and discovered that the layer was made of graphitic carbonand not some kind of protein produced by the body. Understanding how the graphitic carbon forms and how it might affect biological cells could significantly extend implant life.

Want to Save Fuel? Fight Friction!
More than one-third of your car's fuel consumption is spent trying to overcome friction. But, new technologies like surface coatings and textures, lubricant additives, low-viscosity lubricants, and ionic liquids will change that situation. In fact, researchers claim that new nanocomposites and laser texturing techniques can reduce friction by 10% to 50%.
