IGZO the Next Big Step for LCD?
IGZO the Next Big Step for LCD? Low-temperature polysilicon LCDs have been a popular choice for mobile technology like tablets and smartphones, but increasing demand has led manufacturers to seek other solutions for high-resolution, thin-film displays. IGZO LCD panels, the next generation in LCD technology, use transistors manufactured with a new oxide material made from indium, gallium, and zinc to drive liquid crystals in the panel. They can be manufactured (with minor modifications) on conventional amorphous-silicon TFT lines, potentially lowering prices.
Samsung Shifting Focus?
Samsung Shifting Focus? It's true. Well, kind of. Samsung Electronics is spinning off its LCD flat-screen business, shifting its consumer and commercial HDTV focus toward bigger and brighter flat panels: OLED screens. As most consumers have already traded in their old tube TVs for the latest technology, LCD sales are reportedly falling flat, while the OLED market could grow from 4% to 16% of the total display industry by 2018.

OLED Giants Renew Commercial Supply Agreement
OLED Giants Renew Commercial Supply Agreement Universal Display (UDC) signed its first commercial supply agreement with LG Display (then LG.Philips) in 2007, but has never entered into a long-term agreement. The company recently renewed the agreement — this time until the end of June 2012. Negotiations for a long-term agreement continue. LG uses UDC's PHOLED materials in a range of AMOLED displays for smartphones and the new 55 in. 55EM9600 HDTV, slated to begin shipping in Q3 2012.
Taiwan Forms AMOLED Alliance

Taiwan Forms AMOLED Alliance An AMOLED war is brewing, and Taiwan is marshaling its forces. Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs is forming an AMOLED alliance to better compete with AMOLED leaders in Korea. Currently, Taiwan OMELED technology is generations behind that offered by its competitors. Smartphone and tablet manufacturers HTC and Asustek will secure all AMOLED capacities at AUO, while the government will continue to support R&D efforts.

Mobile Display Screen Sales to Surge in 2012
Mobile Display Screen Sales to Surge in 2012 Expect mobile display screen sales to experience a surge as mobile technology leader Apple plans to double its spending for 2012, driven by projected increased sales of the long-awaited next generation iPad, as well as projections for continued high sales for iPhones. Apple is projected to invest $9 billion in display panels, up 91% from the company's 2011 expenditure.
The "Eyes" Have It
The 'Eyes' Have It Contrary to rumors, Apple's new iPad does not feature Senseg technology for a textured screen. It does, however, include a 2048 x 1563 3.1 Mega Pixel Retina Display, providing images as clear as the human eye can see when the iPad is held 15 to 18 in. away. We'd be remiss if we didn't share some of the details.

Heads-up Display Uses Old Technology in a New Way
Heads-up Display Uses Old Technology in a New Way Ever wish you had a pair of glasses that displayed detailed information about your surroundings, like the Terminator or a secret agent? New heads-up display (HUD) glasses will use what insiders presume is a tiny AMOLED screen in the corner of a set of Oakley-style glasses to display advertising and other relevant information. Unfortunately, the glasses won't employ transparent technology or 3D. But it shows what creative minds can do with existing technology.
A Touchscreen... That's Not

A Touchscreen ... That's Not When is a touchscreen not a touchscreen? When users don't have to put finger to glass to execute a command. A new Android handset uses "floating touch" technology that employs a mutual capacitance sensor to detect physical touch and a separate self capacitance sensor for signals hovering up to 22 mm away. This author (and the accompanying comments) suggest that without practical applications, the feature may remain merely a "gimmick."
