Unique Multifunctional Gate Box Provides Machine Control and Personnel Safety
When experience, an ability to innovate, and an open ear for the needs of customers come together, the result is completely new solutions. This is the case for theMultifunctional Gate Box (MGB) from EUCHNER.

The MGB is a locking safety switch, bolt with integrating evaluation (Cat4), and pushbutton control in one package, designed for use in areas where a high level of tamper resistance and safety is required. Unlike universally coded magnetic switches, the CES actuators are uniquely coded and cannot be bypassed by any means.

For additional technical details on the MGB, please visit our Web site.

Sensors Glide Behind Enemy Lines

 Sensors Glide Behind Enemy Lines
Instead of putting soldiers in harm's way, disposable GPS-guided micro drones are designed to glide into areas of interest to capture intelligence. Essentially a sensor-equipped circuit board with wings, a CICADA (Close-In Covert Autonomous Disposable Aircraft) is attached underneath the wings of a mother ship drone, then released to glide into its target area with an accuracy of 4.6 m (15 ft).

The Recon Scout® IR from ReconRoboticscan easily and unobtrusively slip into a collapsed building or a hostage situation where a person can't, and send back real-time images that allow responders to identify a tactical response. It looks like a small dumbbell, but can climb uneven terrain, navigate a path as commanded, and send back a steady stream of images, all while operating untethered.

ReconRobotics used high-torque servomotors fromMICROMO to build the mighty Scout.

Air-less Tires: Just Around the Corner?
Air-less Tires: Just Around the Corner?
For more than a century, drivers have been suffering the consequences when pressurized pneumatic tires lose their air. In a world where high-tech developments routinely transform nearly every aspect of our lives, why hasn't technology produced a tire that does away with flats and blowouts? While development work remains, it appears that Bridgestone has taken a big step in that direction. At the recent Tokyo Motor Show, the company unveiled non-pneumatic concept tires featuring radial "spokes" made by aspecial thermoplastic process. At present, however, the 9 in. tires can only handle loads of around 300 lbs as demonstrated in this story's embedded video.

 Indoor Navigation
GPS is a great for navigating outside, where the satellites' radio signals are strongest, but what can you use when you're indoors? Google and Nokia have begun mapping indoor spaces, using two different technologies. Nokia is adapting Bluetooth positioning beacons, and Google is crowdsourcing floor plans, blueprints, and directories. Next they'll have to tackle the security and privacy issues that will inevitably arise.

Stack-up and the Basics of Multi-layer Construction

"The stack-up is the specific call out of material thickness and copper weights required to produce a particular multi-layered printed circuit board. The description of the stack-up can be found on the PCB fabrication drawing — a drawn cross-section depicting the material and copper thickness of each layer involved. The stack-up is how the designer tells the manufacturer they way to properly build the PCB to work as designed." Read this article in its entirety.
